The Centre for Constitutional Rights applauds the Department of Public Works’ initiative in establishing an umbrella organization which will regulate and co-ordinate the various professions which collectively constitute the built environment. A regulated symbiotic relationship between the various professions will undoubtedly ensure a sustainable built environment. In particular the Centre welcomes the role envisaged in determining and controlling educational standards. The Centre is however concerned about specific constitutional aspects of the Bill. In particular, the Centre is concerned with the composition of both the South African Council for the Built Environment (the Council) and the Professional Boards.  Read more...
